What Makes for A Good Industrial Maintenance Mechanic?

industrial maintenance

In industrial settings, having your machinery regularly inspected and repaired by trained industrial maintenance mechanics is key. Choosing your mechanic, however, can be a tall task. It’s hard to know what to look for in your maintenance technicians.

So, what makes for a good industrial maintenance mechanic? Next time you hire a mechanic, use this guide to know what to look for and what to avoid.

Start With the Basics: Communication and Math Skills

In industrial maintenance projects, your mechanic will need to be proficient in their communication and basic math skills. Look for someone who is knowledgeable and transparent. More advanced repairs will require more in-depth knowledge of techniques, like welding or machining, and a variety of sciences.

Your mechanic should also be trained in the use of computer numeric control (CNC) machines to machine necessary parts for repairs, and should have proficiency in computer-aided drafting (CAD) programs.

Look For Preventative Maintenance Experts

Most machines will require preventative industrial maintenance, so it’s important you hire a technician who can service your machinery properly to prevent any breakdowns. The best mechanics are able to solve problems before they arise and are professionals in inspecting and servicing your machines.

Industrial maintenance mechanics also need to be able to decipher schematics when a machine shuts down so that they can quickly solve the issue at hand. Experience, professionalism, and knowledge should be at the top of your list when selecting a mechanic. The more experience they have, the more likely they’re able to help prevent and resolve any issues that may arrise.

Don’t Settle—Require Excellence From Your Mechanics

An industrial maintenance mechanic’s track record should speak for itself. Look into what previous jobs they’ve worked on and ensure that they have a track record of excellence. Call the technician’s previous clients for references. Research any applicable certifications they claim, and find a mechanic that matches all of your requirements. Do your own background check for past services, years of experience, and any training they’ve received.
